1) Condorcet's Method: series of one-on-one contests in which each alternative is pitted against one another. An alternative x is a winner if for every other alternative y, at least half the voters rank x over y on their individual preference lists. For example, if there are 4 alternatives a,b,c,d, and for every one-on-one contest b defeats the other alternative, then b is the unique winner (social choice). If b fails to defeat just one of the alternatives, then there is no winner. Show
2) Plurality Voting: The social choice(s) is the alternative(s) with the largest number of first-place rankings in the individual preference lists. For example, if there are 3 alternatives a,b,c, and a is at the top of 3 lists, b is at the top of 4 lists, and c is at the top of 1 list, then b is the winner (social choice). 3) The Borda Count: The alternative(s) with the highest amount of points (Borda score) is declared to be the social choice. For each preference list, the alternative at the bottom of the list gets the least points (0) and the alternative at the top of the list gets the most points. For example, if there are 4 alternatives a,b,c,d, and an individual preference list has the order bacd, then d = 0 points, c= 1 point, a = 2 points, and b = 3 points. 4) The Hare System: AKA single transferable vote system or instant runoff voting; Based on the idea of arriving at a social choice by successive deletions of less desirable alternatives. We begin by deleting the alternative(s) occurring on top of the fewest lists. Then we repeat this process of deleting the least desirable alternative(s). The alternative(s) deleted last is declared the winner (social choice). 5) Sequential Pairwise Voting w/ a Fixed Agenda: We have a fixed ordering of the alternatives a,b,c,... called the agenda. The first alternative in the ordering is pitted against the second in a one-on-one contest. The winning alternative (or both, if there's a tie) is then pitted against the third alternative in the list in a one-on-one contest. An alternative is deleted at the end of any round in which it loses a one-on-one contest. The process is continued until we reach the last alternative in the agenda. Those remaining at the end are declared to be the social choices. 6) Dictatorship: Given a sequence of individual preference lists, we simply ignore all the lists except that of the dictator. The alternative on top of the dictator's list is now declared to be the social choice.
