Wer ist seneca crane

The Hunger Games is a movie franchise like no other. It is unapologetically brutal, and it gets deadlier with every movie. One of those characters that made the games deadlier was Seneca Crane. As fans of both the franchise and the book (the films were adapted from a novel series by Suzanne Collins who sometimes showed up to set), Seneca was Head Gamemaker who figured quite prominently in the first Hunger Games movie.

Throughout the story, Seneca worked to make the games as ‘entertaining’ as possible as he was involved in designing the arena itself to picking out the Tributes (including lead stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson). Unfortunately, Seneca wouldn’t live long enough to see the conclusion of the franchise. Since then, however, the actor behind the role has taken on various other projects, finding success in both film and television.

Who Played Seneca Crane In ‘The Hunger Games’?

The character was portrayed by actor Wes Bentley. Several years before The Hunger Games, the actor first caught everyone’s attention for his role in the 1999 Oscar-winning drama American Beauty as the school outcast Ricky Fitts. Back then, it looked like Bentley was destined for even bigger things. But then, substance abuse derailed the actor’s rise.

During this period, the Arkansas native only did every few years, working with his best friend, the late Heath Ledger, on The Four Feathers in 2000 and then shooting The Games of Their Lives in 2003. After that, Bentley didn’t work on another film again until he shot The Ghost Rider in 2005. He also didn’t care much for his career, even turning down the likes of Ang Lee, Tony Scott, and Tim Burton.

“I put up such a wall that I didn’t even go and meet with these great directors whom I respected and admired so much,” Bentley confessed.

Fortunately, Bentley eventually got himself clean. And once he sobered up, he got approached for roles once more. One of which was The Hunger Games whose producer, Nina Jacobson, was convinced that Bentley should play Seneca.

“We knew Wes could hold his own against Donald Sutherland and felt he had the sophistication to capture the arrogance and intelligence of Seneca without becoming a mustache-twirling cliché,” she even said.

And while Bentley only remained in The Hunger Games franchise until the first film, things were different for the actor this time around. Instead of disappearing every few years, Bentley kept his head down and worked some more this time. That eventually paid off.

Here’s What Wes Bentley Has Been Up To Since ‘The Hunger Games’

Aside from The Hunger Games, Bentley also appeared in several other films in 2012. These include the action-adventure Hirokin: The Last Samurai, the mystery film The Time Being, and the Mexican film Hidden Moon.

The following year, Bentley joined the cast of the 2013 biopic Lovelace where he played Thomas, the photographer. Soon after, the actor also starred in the Norwegian thriller Pioneer. Just a year later, Bentley starred in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning film Interstellar, which also stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, and a much younger Timothée Chalamet.

The film may have received mixed reviews, but Bentley was unfazed by it. “I think getting a strong reaction, about when it’s a balanced strong reaction, is a good sign. It shows the movie really challenges and presses buttons,” the actor explained. “A lot of times when you’re pressing the boundaries, it rubs people the wrong way. But I think a visceral response is a great response when you’re being creative.”

Around the same time, Bentley also got cast in American Horror Story, the horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy. He ended up playing multiple characters across various seasons (which included the highly criticized fifth season entitled Hotel), which Bentley found to be exhilarating. “Ryan challenges his actors,” the actor explained. “They’re like a theater troupe, and he comes up with something new each season and presses them to go even further. I loved being around that.”

Meanwhile, after ending his time in Murphy’s series, the actor went on to briefly appear in Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout where he played Erik, the new husband of Ethan’s (Cruise) ex-wife, Julia (Michelle Monaghan).

Not long after, Bentley also joined the cast of the Paramount’s Yellowstone, which also stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, and Kelly Reilly. In the Western drama, the actor plays Jamie Dutton, the adopted son of John (Costner) and Evelyn (Gretchen Mol) Dutton. For Bentley, the role had been fun to play from day one since he sees Jamie as this multi-layered character.

“I think it's a blast. I mean, it's fun because he's complicated,” the actor explained. “[The audiences see] it [as] 'Jamie, he's a bad guy now.' And I know that they know more than that -- that it's deeper than that. It's more complicated than that. But it's fun.”

Meanwhile, the premiere date of Yellowstone’s fifth season hasn’t been announced yet. That said, when it returns, all eyes will be on Bentley’s Jamie as he deals with the ramifications of his deadly actions at the end of season four.
