How long does a North Carolina agent have to notify the department of insurance in the event of a change in residence address?

Change of Address for Producer or Adjuster

The Louisiana Department of Insurance tracks three addresses for every licensed insurance producer and adjuster; mailing address, resident/domicile address, and business address. An insurance producer or adjuster is required to notify the Department of Insurance of the change of any of those addresses within 30 days of the effective date of any change. As notifications such as renewal reminders are sent by e-mail, licensees are urged to also keep e-mail addresses updated. The process to update address information differs if the address change involved a change of state.

Change of Address – No Change of State and Updates to e-mail Addresses

Changes of address that do not involve a change of state must be submitted by electronic means. A licensee may submit a change of address or update an e-mail address by logging into the Producer/Adjuster module within the Industry Access on the Louisiana Department of Insurance website and following the instructions. Individual address and e-mail changes may also be submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) using the Contact Change Request.

 Change of Address – Change of State

There are 7 possible situations where licenses move from one state to another state. Instructions apply to producers and adjusters unless otherwise noted.

 (1) An individual moving to Louisiana who does not hold a license in another state must meet all of the requirements applicable to a first-time resident license applicant.

 (2) A licensee who is licensed as a nonresident in Louisiana moving from one nonresident state to another nonresident state (for example: Arizona to Texas) should submit a change online using the Contact Change Request through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) within 30 days of the change of legal residence. If these requirements are not met within 30 days, the licensee will be required to submit a first-time application and appropriate fees.

 (3) An individual who is licensed as a resident of Louisiana and moves to another state must provide our office with a State-to-State Transfer Form. (This will make them a nonresident in Louisiana.) If these requirements are not met within 30 days of the change of legal residence, the licensee will be required to submit a first-time application and applicable fees to become re-licensed as a nonresident. If the license is expired, then a reinstatement application and appropriate fees are required.  If the new home state requires a Letter of Clearance, please submit a Cancellation/Clearance Request. 

Resident adjusters who are moving to another state that does not require adjuster licensing may choose to continue to designate Louisiana as the home state for licensing purposes. If the adjuster chooses to designate another state as their licensing home state must submit proof of designated status in the new state.

 (4) An individual that is not licensed in Louisiana that moves to Louisiana from a state where they held a license shall provide within 90 days of the date they established legal residency a first-time application and applicable license fees. The individual is subject to fingerprinting requirements but exempt from any exam and prelicensing requirements. If the requirement is not met within the allotted time frame, the individual will be required to comply with all first-time resident license requirements.

 (5) An individual that is licensed as a nonresident of Louisiana who changes to a resident of Louisiana must submit within 90 days of the date they established legal residency a first-time application and applicable first-time license fees. (They are exempt from exam and prelicensing). If the requirement is not met within the allotted timeframe, the Producer will be required to take prelicensing and pass the insurance licensing exam as applicable. It does not matter if the nonresident license is current or expired.

 (6) An individual moving to Louisiana who previously held a resident license in Louisiana but never became a licensed as a nonresident of Louisiana and is within the reinstatement period must submit a reinstatement form and applicable fees.

 (7) A licensee that was licensed as a resident of Louisiana, changed to a nonresident of Louisiana, then moves back to become a resident of Louisiana again will need a State to State Transfer Form if the license is current. If the license is expired but eligible for reinstatement, then a reinstatement application and applicable fees are required.

Branch Office Filings

In addition to requirements for notice of an address change, a business entity that holds an insurance producer license is required to notify the Department of Insurance of the addition of a branch office within 30 days of the date the branch office is opened. This notice must include the name and license number of the licensee and the complete municipal address of the branch office. Notice may be submitted in Industry Access.
